Public Works
Ronald Romak, Director
The Director of Public
Work is appointed by the Borough Council. His or her responsibilities
include maintaining the Borough's infrastructure and public
facilities. Any problems observed with streets, sanitary sewers and
public buildings should be brought to the attention of this office.
Typically, these problems could be; pot holes, missing street or traffic
lights, blocked catch basins, blocked sight distance at intersections, etc.
Leaf Collection
Leaves are collected
curbside during the month of November. If biodegradable bags are used,
bags must contain only leaves. Bags with branches, yard waste, etc. will be
rejected. The bags should be placed behind the curb – not in the
street. A brochure outlining the Leaf Collection Program is mailed to all
residents in September.
Shade Tree Commission
Any tree in the street
right-of-way falls under the jurisdiction of the Shade Tree Commission and
cannot be removed or trimmed without written permission from the Shade Tree
Commission. The street right-of-way is generally defined as the first
ten feet (10 ft.) behind the curb line. On some streets the
right-of-way may be more than ten feet, therefore if the ownership of a
tree is in question, please call (908) 232-2409 for a determination.

Clean Communities Program
Using a grant from the
state of New Jersey, the Borough runs a Clean Communities Program each fall
which consists of: educational programs for our students at Deerfield
School, a clean-up day open to all residents, and sending a brochure to all
residents advertising the clean-up day and asking their assistance in
keeping Mountainside clean. The day consists of community minded
volunteers picking up litter on local, county and state lands. A lunch is
provided for all participants. To volunteer, please call (908) 232-2400.
